We produce public programs that enliven and expand conversations around artistic legacies. Through a combination of panel discussions, workshops, and by-invitation roundtables, we endeavor to profile the labor that goes into preserving archives, share resources and help establish artists’ archives as a critical field of study.

At Independent 20th Century, the Institute presented selections from two artists’ archives we’ve recently supported: Zahoor ul Akhlaq (1941-1999) and Mary Dill Henry (1913 – 2009).

In 2021 we organized two roundtable conversations bringing together a small group of innovators in the field of artists’ archives to share our work and discuss the most pressing needs for artists and adjacent communities.

Fall Conversations: Artists on Archives

October 2019

Presented in partnership with the Grey Art Gallery NYU and The Brooklyn Rail, this series of panel discussions explored the relationship between archives and the creative process in contemporary art. The panelists discussed how archival research inspires artistic practice and the ways artists explore their own archives for inspiration.
